ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a gatherer, seeker, recycler and poet with eyes ever to the ground...the sky...the periphery...
Sometimes my work is about color. Sometimes it begins with a clipped or envisioned image. Always, it’s about texture. A piece may flash full-blown before me, but more often, a shard surfaces and teases me on toward recreating the whole. Synchronicity seems always at play in my process.
As Donald B. Kuspit put it, “Collage makes poetry with the prosaic fragments of dailiness.”
In “The Collagerie,” (Studio #340 in the Upper Mill at Salmon Falls in Rollinsford, NH) you’ll find walls and surfaces covered with mixed-media collages, assemblages, paintings, masks, bed spring and fiber arts and all manner of gathered things. There, Mary Lou offers workshops and “collage therapy,” and continuously explores the possibilities of gathered and found objects as art.
Set up an appointment to visit her space, put yourself on her email list or attend Open Studios Days each Spring and Fall (details at www.millartists.com) for a sensory treat.
